ปัจจุบันศูนย์ความเป็นเลิศทางการแพทย์ (Excellent Center) ภายใต้สำนักการแพทย์ กรุงเทพมหานคร มีจำนวน 8 ศูนย์ฯ ซึ่ง 4 แห่งตั้งอยู่ภายใต้โรงพยาบาลกลาง 2 แห่งอยู่ภายใต้โรงพยาบาลตากสิน และอีก 2 แห่งอยู่ภายใต้โรงพยาบาลเจริญกรุงประชารักษ์ นอกจากนี้มีแผนการผลักดันการจัดตั้งศูนย์ความเป็นเลิศเพิ่มเติมอีก 1 แห่ง คือศูนย์โรคระบบทางเดินหายใจ โรงพยาบาลสิรินธร 

จากข้อมูลข้างต้นพบว่ามีการกระจุกตัวของศูนย์ความเป็นเลิศและเจ้าหน้าที่แพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะในบางพื้นที่ ส่งผลต่อการบริการรักษาโรคเฉพาะทาง ความสะดวกสบาย และการเข้าถึงการรักษาพยาบาลของประชาชนที่ไม่ทั่วถึงครอบคลุม

ดังนั้น กทม. จะผลักดันการเพิ่มจำนวนศูนย์ความเป็นเลิศทางการแพทย์ให้ครอบคลุมกลุ่มโรคคนเมืองยุคใหม่ ตลอดจนครอบคลุมพื้นที่บริการให้ครบทั้ง 6 กลุ่มเขตทั่วกรุงเทพฯ ในโรงพยาบาลอื่น ๆ ภายใต้สังกัด นอกจากนี้ต้องมีการบูรณาการทางวิชาการและงานวิจัย ผลักดัน ตลอดจนส่งเสริมให้หน่วยงานศูนย์เวชศาสตร์เขตเมือง (Urban Medicine Center) คณะแพทยศาสตร์วชิรพยาบาล มหาวิทยาลัยนวมินทราธิราช ที่อยู่ภายใต้สังกัด กทม.เป็นศูนย์วิจัยการรักษาที่มีความเป็นเลิศทั้งในระดับประเทศและนานาชาติ

  - Bangkok residents will have access to high quality medical services from experienced doctors and be exposed to lower risk of fatalities and injuries.

Details

Currently, there are 8 Excellent Centers under the Medical Bureau of BMA. Four of them are administered by the BMA General Hospital (Klang Hospital), 2 under Taksin Hospital, and 2 others under Charoen Krung Pracharak Hospital. Another Excellent Center (Respiratory Disease Center) has been planned to be established at Sirindhorn Hospital.

Based on the above data, Excellent Centers and medical specialists are concentrated in certain areas. This can have a negative effect on patients with certain diseases who need specialized care, convenience and access to inclusive medical services.

BMA will increase the number of Excellent Centers to cover all diseases for urban people and 6 groups of districts all over the metropolitan area in other hospitals under BMA. Academic work and research will be promoted and integrated. The Urban Medicine Center of the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital under BMA will be upgraded to provide excellent medical services at the national and international standards.
